Mango Kiwi Smoothie

Mango kiwi smoothie in VitamixThis smoothie has totally different flavors from the ones I’ve previously described, which are often based on berries or ginger. Sourness from the kiwi complements the mango, and cilantro gives it a surprisingly delicious extra kick.

½ cup yogurt
1 orange (peeled)
1 kiwi
small handful cilantro
handful frozen mango chunks

Blend on high until smooth. Makes a single ~16–20-oz serving.

I haven’t been peeling the kiwi because the Vitamix has no problem with obliterating the skin, it adds a little nutritional value, it’s easier, and I think it tastes fine. The skin has a slight sharp flavor, so if you want a maximally mellow smoothie you could peel it (if you’re going to, it’s easiest to cut it in half and scoop the flesh out with a spoon).

This smoothie is also good with coconut milk instead of yogurt. You could use fresh mango, but frozen is really convenient, especially for making a single serving like this. (I’ve been getting frozen mango from Trader Joe’s.) You could also boost the nutritional content by adding a carrot, chia seeds, or some other greens like spinach or kale.

Thanks to my mom and commenter Donna for encouraging me to use cilantro in fruit smoothies. It works surprisingly well!

Mango Kiwi Smoothie — 10 Comments

  1. Glad you like the cilantro in the fruit smoothies! I have never left the skin on my kiwis before. I didn’t think it was edible. I will have to try it.

  2. Adam, you are a genius. I made the kiwi/mango smoothie this morning and it was awesome. I did not have any cilantro on hand (still too cold here for my garden) and so squeezed a little lime juice in it. I used fresh mango, and it was great. Will use cilantro next time. Can you freeze fresh mango, as they are very cheap right now at the market?

    • I’m glad you liked this one! I’ve never frozen mangoes myself, but I’m sure you can. My thought would be to cut them into chunks, freeze on cookie sheets, and then put in freezer bags.

  3. The cilantro mango combo was amazing. Reminded me of fruit chaat. I kind of want to try it again with some dried mango seed powder and just a hint of jalapeño!

  4. I’ve been adding cilantro to my fruit smoothies and love the fresh taste it gives. Am going to try this mango kiwi combo today (minus the yogurt since I don’t do dairy, maybe coconut water instead). Thanks for the tip on keeping cilantro fresh a little longer. I’m definitely going to try that.

  5. I added too much cilantro at first and it was overpowering, but throw in half a banana and it really adds to the flavor

  6. Thank you for the recipe and the idea to use cilantro in smoothies! This was the first thing I made in my new Vitamix 750, tripled to feed my entire family. All three of us loved the flavor, but hubby had a reaction to the kiwi. It turns out that some people are sensitive to it. He stopped drinking his when he felt a burning at the back of his throat. For anyone who has a kiwi sensitivity, perhaps lemon would give a similar tartness without the reaction. I will be trying this recipe with that tweak in future.
